Challenge

Making the transition in the mobility sector socially equitable is one of the great challenges of our time – especially in regions with a strong automotive industry, such as Eastern Europe. For this transition to succeed, ecological, economic and social concerns must be considered together. This is where the EcoMobility Transition project comes in, empowering regional actors to actively shape the necessary transformation processes.

The project in detail

The EcoMobility Transition project supports regions in Poland, Slovakia, Czechia and Hungary in shaping a fair and sustainable mobility transition. Instead of considering vehicle production and mobility patterns separately, we combine both aspects. Industry and mobility must be considered together. To this end, we work closely with local stakeholders – from trade unions to city administrations, to employees and civil society. Together, we develop strategies for a just transition to the mobility of the future. For us, this means a fair and inclusive way to secure jobs, reduce emissions and make regions fit for the future.

The research part of the project involves interviews, case studies and analyses to identify and systematically evaluate existing strategies and initiatives for a just transition. There is a particular focus on how employees, trade unions and other important groups can be actively involved in the change processes. On this basis, workshops and dialogue formats are being developed to bring together trade unions, employers, local authorities and educational institutions and support them in developing concrete solutions.

In addition, we are developing a practical toolkit for a fair mobility transition. It includes a self-assessment tool for evaluating regional transformation capacity, a collection of proven strategies, and guidelines for designing participation processes. All materials are provided in English and in the respective national languages.

The project is part of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK).
